Chinese Tea Gift Guide: Five Classic Teas and Who They Suit
Share
A bag of good loose-leaf tea makes a quiet, thoughtful gift: something to open slowly, smell, and come back to for weeks. Our teas come in their normal retail packaging, a sealed bag with a reusable clip, so the leaf is the gift. These five Chinese classics cover very different tastes. Use the table to match a tea to the person, then read the notes below.

Hangzhou Longjing: for the green-tea curious

LongJing is the green tea most people have heard of, and a good first gift. Ours is Hangzhou Longjing, and the X grade comes from West Lake (西湖) in Hangzhou. Our LongJing is made from spring tea and finished on the traditional fire path: fuller wok heat with later 辉锅 (hui guo) finishing. That gives the dry leaf a warm, rough-rice yellow (糙米黄) tone and a clean roasted-bean aroma in the cup. The flat leaves are hand-picked, one bud with one or two leaves.
Gift tip: include a note on water temperature (80–85°C). Too-hot water is the most common reason a green tea tastes bitter.
Grades: B · A · S · X, in 100 g and 250 g bags.

BiLuoChun: for someone who loves floral, delicate cups

BiLuoChun comes from Dongting Mountain. The leaves are tightly curled and covered in fine white down (tea villus). That down sometimes falls off in the bag. It's tea hair, not mold. The cup is sweet and floral with a soft, lingering finish.
Gift tip: brew it in a clear glass. Watching the curls open is half the pleasure.
Grades: B · A, in 100 g and 250 g bags.

Keemun: for the black-tea and breakfast-cup drinker

Keemun is one of China's classic black teas, from Qimen County in Anhui. After the sip you may notice notes that recall rose and honey, with a light woody depth. It's a black tea, not a rose blend. Keemun KongFu (祁门工夫) is the traditional "gongfu" style: fine, uniform leaf with a thick, bright red liquor. Brew at 90°C / 194°F.
Gift tip: a reliable pick for someone who already drinks black tea and wants to try a Chinese classic.
Grades: Keemun KongFu B · A · S (170 g and 340 g bags). Keemun XiangLuo B · A · S (100 g and 250 g bags).

TieGuanYin: for the gongfu-curious friend

TieGuanYin is an oolong from Anxi, Fujian. We carry three roast styles:
- Fragrant: lightly processed (正炒, zheng chao), floral and fresh, with the lingering "GuanYin Yun" finish.
- Carbon: heavy roast, deeper and roasted, with a thick soup.
- Fruity: light roast, with a natural sweet-and-sour, fruit-like taste.
Oolongs like boiling water and reward many short infusions in a gaiwan.
Grades: Fragrant C · B · A · AA · S. Carbon B · A. Fruity C · B · A. Bags are 100 g and/or 250 g, depending on grade. AA sits within grade A: same A-level Tea-Feel Fullness, with stronger supporting factors such as aroma.

Taiju chrysanthemum buds: for evenings and anyone avoiding caffeine

Taiju (胎菊), often called fetal chrysanthemum, means small, unopened chrysanthemum buds. Ours are from Tongxiang, Zhejiang. They brew a pale, clear cup with a soft sweetness and a quiet floral aroma. Chrysanthemum is a flower, not the tea plant, so the cup is naturally caffeine-free. Our buds are SGS-tested for sulfur dioxide (result: not detected; report no. GZF26-0041936-01).
Gift tip: good for someone who drinks tea late in the day, or anyone who likes a calm, pretty cup.
Grade: A, in a 100 g bag.

Choosing a grade for a gift
Cha Wu grades every tea by Tea-Feel Fullness (茶感饱满度): how complete and lasting the feel of the cup is, from the front of the mouth toward the throat. Grades run C · B · A · S · X. Flavor doesn't set the grade.
- B: a full, satisfying everyday cup. A good pick for someone building a daily habit.
- C: an easy entry-level cup with basic sweetness (Fragrant and Fruity TieGuanYin).
- B: a full, satisfying everyday cup. A good pick for someone building a daily habit.
- A: smooth across the whole palate. A good step up for a gift.
- AA: sits within A. Same A-level Tea-Feel Fullness, with stronger supporting factors such as aroma (Fragrant TieGuanYin).
- S / X: for someone who already loves tea and will notice the feel reaching the throat.
